Route 66 Festival Memory Lane
“DOORS”
The Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission presents a self-guided tour of local “DOORS” dating from 1850 until mid-1900.
The HPC has saved these DOORS over the years and now presents them to you!
Be ready to take a trip down memory lane with DOORS like grandmas or at the house where y
ou grew up! Young adults and children will take a fun trip back in time as they explore this exhibit.
There are DOORS constructed of cypress and pine.
There are DOORS that are painted, including a five-panel ladder-type door with faux oak grain finish. Faux graining, popular in the late 1800’s, is considered a lost art.
There are old doorknockers that knock and a hand crank doorbell that really works! A service, basement or attic, door that opens with a wooden thread spool knob is sure to bring back a lot of memories. You will see DOORS with brass push plates and copper and patina hardware manufactured during the early 1900s at the N.O. Nelson Manufacturing Co. in Leclaire.

You will learn the names of various styles of doors from the past, the style of the framework around each door, the age of the door and much more. Each DOOR has a story to tell!
